My Utmost for His Highest

Back to the Bible

1. The Lord’s Supper, is an ordinance left by the Lord Jesus Christ for all believers to observe (participate in) as often as the local church prescribes. Each time the Supper is given, it is given as a memorial of Jesus’ vicarious (substitutionary) death for our sins.

    a. The Bread - Represents (is a symbol of) the Body of the Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 11:24 And when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, “This is My body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.”

    b. The Juice - Represents (is a symbol of) the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ which was poured out for mankind’s sin. (Juice is used rather than wine in deference to those who have alcohol related health issues).

1 Corinthians 11:25 In the same way He took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

2. Believers Baptism is a prerequisite to participating in the Lord’s Supper. It is an ordinance to be observed exclusively by the members of a visible Church of Jesus Christ.  No one can be members of a visible  Church of Christ without baptism.

3. Jesus Christ instituted the Church and gave it two ordinances: Believer’s Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Baptism is a picture of the Lord’s death, burial, and resurrection, and the Lord’s Supper is a picture of what He has done for us. Both will be done away with when He returns.

4. There is nothing “magical” about the Lord’s Supper.  It is an important ordinance that the Lord left for us to observe until He returns.  It should only be practiced by those who have believed on His name.

5. We DO NOT believe the Bible teaches:

    a. Transubstantiation -  As the Roman Catholic church teaches. They teach that the bread and the wine of the Lord’s Supper are actually changed into the real body and blood of Jesus.

    b. Con-substantiation - As the Lutheran church teaches.  They teach that the body and the blood are materially present in the sacrament (not ordinance) of the Lord’s Supper.

    c. Sealing Ordinance - As the Presbyterians teach. They teach that Ephesians 1:13 which says, in part, “you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,” teaches that the Lord’s Supper seals the believer when they partake of the Lord’s Supper. The verse actually teaches that every believer is sealed by the Holy Spirit at the time of the new birth, not when they partake of the Lord’s Supper.
